I find many of these appraisals to be at odds with the actual use cases of generative AI out there in the world. First, AI is mostly functioning as a kind of marketing hook—the quintessence of what we mean by "hype". It's not that different in this usage from "special ingredients" added to foods, cosmetics, toothpaste and the like that did little to actually change the function or effectiveness of the product. AI is being bundled into applications and platforms whose users did not ask for AI, whose purpose is not related to AI.

Large models should not be viewed primarily as intelligent agents but as a new kind of cultural and social technology, allowing humans to take advantage of information other humans have accumulated.
In my years writing this newsletter I have come across few companies as rotten as CoreWeave — an "AI cloud provider" that sells GPU compute to AI companies looking to run or train their models.
CoreWeave had intended to go public last week, with an initial valuation of $35bn. While it's hardly a recognizable name — like, say, OpenAI, or Microsoft, or Nvidia — this company is worth observing, if not for the fact that it's arguably the first major IPO that we've seen from the current generative AI hype bubble, and undoubtedly the biggest. Moreover, it's a company that deals in the infrastructure aspect of AI, where one would naturally assume is where all the money really is — putting up the servers for hyperscalers to run their hallucination-prone, unprofitable models.
If your company is building any kind of AI product or tool, congratulations! You are now an AI company.

The future of education depends on what we expect students to remember and do, not just what they can prompt Chatbots to generate. Thus forget banning AI. Instead teach students what it can't do for them. AI is simply the latest abstraction layer improving our information technology, a further step forward in the progression that started when we replaced clay with papyrus. Such abstractions are tremendously valuable, and productive. And so they become indispensable—until they break, and are no longer so.
