Abstract: This paper focuses on water temperature, quantity, quality, and distribution of the hot

springs in Fujian, China, and discusses hydrothermal anomaly zones in hot springs. Concerning the

thermal source of hot springs in Fujian, China, there are many hypotheses. The authors discuss the

main viewpoints on this topic, and present their viewpoint on the genesis of hot springs in Fujian,

China.

Why it's cool... Hot springs are not only a source of clean hydrothermal power in the 21st century,

they just plain feel good to laze around in. Ponce De Leon, the first Spaniard to truly explore Florida

was looking for a mythical Fountain of Eternal Youth, later attributed by researchers to hot springs

found around Georgia and Alabama. The geological explanations for hot spring locations can range

from active volcanism to continental hot-spots.

Abstract: We analyzed the characteristics of the Yongan Ms 5.2 earthquake sequence of May 31,

1997, in Fujian Province, and demonstrated that it was of the foreshock-mainshohck-aftershock type.

According to the tectonic background in the seismic area, field investigation of intensity, focal

mechanism and distribution of aftershocks, we came to the conclusion that the fault which led to this

earthquake is the Wan'an-Gutian left-lateral thrust fault. Available at the Library of Congress,

Why it's cool... The eastern end of Asia composes the northeast quarter of the Ring of Fire, a

siesmically active zone that surrounds the Pacific Ocean. Population densities in Asia are such that

any ability to predict destructive geologic events, earthquake or otherwise, would be extremely useful.
