Taiwan's major daily newspapers are expected to be able to enter mainland China via the "mini three

links" within one month, business sources said.

Taiwan dailies, including the mass-circulation United Daily News and the China Times and their

spinoffs, the Economic Daily News and the Commercial Times, are expected to make inroads into the

mainland this month through Xiamen in Fujian province via the island of Kinmen, said Wu Tseng-yun, a

Kinmen-based businessman. Wu acquired the distribution rights for the United Daily News and the

China Times at the end of January and will be the sole agent and distributor of the four dailies in Fujian.

East China's Fujian Province recorded an enviable industrial growth rate in 2002, with the electronics,

machinery and petrochemical sectors as the major driving forces.

Last year, large-scale industrial enterprises in Fujian, one of China's most booming regions, produced

an estimated total of 103.5 billion yuan (12.47 billion US dollars) in value-added output, a year-on-year

increase of 19.5 percent, the highest in the country.

The electronics, machinery and petrochemical sectors combined accounted for 45 percent of the

value-added output, said Xie Xianwen, director of the provincial economic and trade commission.

In order to maintain the robust growth, the province will focus its efforts on expanding the three

sectors, Xie added.

With regard to the electronics sector, provincial authorities intend to develop computer and related

networks, telecom terminals, software, digital audio and video, and new components.

The priorities for the machinery sector will include motor vehicles, transport machinery, engineering

machinery and electronic devices.

For the petrochemical sector, efforts will be put on the popularization of production technology for

clean fuel, intensified processing technology for heavy oil and new synthetic materials products.

In addition, the sector plans to increase its production of fine chemicals and build Asia's largest

chlorate (chloric acid salt) production base.
