data -> information -> knowledge ->
wisdom
Each step in this chain requires a transformation: - the
patterns in data constitute information, and are visualized
through analytical tools and the search for recurrence. Cookbook
routines and statistical software seem to simplify transformation (often
by automation of tedious steps), but the increase in power and scope
makes it even more important to consider implicit assumptions --whether
in the choice of instruments and statistics or the drawing of analogies.
- the links
between items of information are the basis for knowledge, and are a
visual metaphor for conceptual connections, which may grow into networks
of interconnectivity. Integrating and tending such networks is really
demanding, and requires continual questioning and testing of what seems
to be known.
- the implications of
knowledge are the foundation of the wisdom we ultimately aspire to. We
often face the implications when we teach others.
How do people learn the skills of transformation?
