***n.b.: this is in the very earliest stages**
The elements of History of Science seem to me to be:
- chronology: who learned what when and how, and what influence did
that learning have on others?
- diffusion and communication: social and intellectual consequences;
and practical or technological consequences
- apparatus, manipulation, methods: the 'how'
- mental processes (the 'cognitive dimension' [Gascoigne 1987:vii])
- personality and biography: each individual has a story which
illuminates career and discoveries
- Scientific Community: integration with scientific knowledge of the time
One can choose a topic and use each of the above in turn to illuminate it.
