  16. Beloit College
  17. http://www.beloit.edu/~academic/fields/idstminors/enst-over.html
The environmental studies minor strives to analyze the relationship of humans and their societies to the natural environment. This relationship involves three major components that are interconnected: (1) the benefits humans derive from their environment, such as the natural resources used to sustain societies; (2) the threat to humans from natural hazards such as landslides, earthquakes, floods, and volcanic eruptions; (3) the effect that human populations have on the environment, including pollution and other environmental degradation. The interactions of humans with the environment are not only influenced by variations in the natural environment such as the geology, geography, climate, flora, and fauna, but also by variations and characteristics of human cultures such as economics, government, and societal values and ethics.
  18. Bennington College
  19. Birmingham Southern College

The program examines scientific, economic, political, cultural, and ethical concepts regarding the complex relationships between the natural world and the human-modified world in order to ensure a sustainable society for future generations. Students will be prepared for careers in the public and private sectors or graduate studies. The student's major field of study develops the disciplinary skills of inquiry and analysis, and the minor complements the major by providing the integration of approaches to address environmental issues.
  21. Bowdoin College
  22. http://academic.bowdoin.edu/environmental_studies/
Environmental Studies at Bowdoin reflects the college’s recognition that humans must learn to live in harmony with nature and that human activities are dependent upon natural processes. This recognition, coupled with an aspiration to present and future human well-being, provides a critical perspective from which to interpret history, science, politics, law, economy, religion, and the arts. A liberal arts education should promote environmental literacy: an understanding of the world around us - the built and the natural, the local and the global, our role in it, and our effects upon it.
  23. Bryn Mawr College
  24. http://www.brynmawr.edu/academics/fields_study/environmentalsciences.shtml
Environmental studies concern interactions taking place at the Earth’s surface – the site of intersection of the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and biosphere, as well as our home as human beings. Accordingly, environmental studies are of necessity broadly multidisciplinary. Understanding the Earth’s responses to local and global perturbations requires that we focus our study on the interactions between inorganic, biologic and societal processes, not only in the present day, but through history and over geologic time as well. These interactions are best viewed as a dynamic, interlinked system. Understanding the structure of this system has become one of the most important long-term problems facing society in light of humankind’s increasing capacity — and increasing eagerness — to alter the environment.

Our ability to modify our environment has increased dramatically over the last several centuries. A host of recent events has forced us to become aware of the negative aspects of these modifications. More and more scientists are involved in seeking solutions to environmental problems as they work to increase our understanding of the causes, processes, and consequences of environmental change. The "typical" environmental scientist is a specialist in one of the traditional disciplines such as biology, chemistry, geology, physics, or engineering. However, he or she generally has a broad scientific understanding of environmental change that goes beyond the confines of his or her discipline. It also includes an understanding of how environmental issues affect and are affected by politics and economics. The environmental scientist will often work in a team with professionals from other backgrounds to study and solve environmental problems.
  75. Juniata College
  76. http://departments.juniata.edu/environmental/
The environment is a central issue here at the beginning of the 21th century. Paired forces, of exponentially increasing population and exponentially increasing consumption, result in complex, negative environmental impacts across the world. Understanding these impacts, to prevent them, to manage them or just to predict them, requires a variety of knowledge and skills. Environmental Science and Environmental Studies are two approaches to gaining this information.
  77. Kalamazoo College

    http://www.colleges.org/~enviro/courses/Trinity.html
The Environmental Studies minor is an interdisciplinary study of the Earth's environment and human interaction with that environment. Environmental Studies is a program of breadth, not concentration, in which students address environmental issues from natural science, economic, and sociocultural perspectives. The minor includes required courses in anthropology, biology, economics, and geoscience and electives in areas ranging from history to organic chemistry. Given the breadth of this minor, a significant overlap with a student's choice of Common Curriculum courses is both expected and encouraged.

We believe that the combination of a strong, traditional undergraduate major with the minor in Environmental Studies is the best approach for any undergraduate who wants a career involved with environmental issues. Students who are interested in the natural sciences might major in biology, chemistry, engineering, geoscience, or physics. Students interested in environmental policy might major in economics, political science, or sociology. Students interested in communicating environmental concerns might major in communication, English, or art. You can combine any Trinity major with the Environmental Studies minor to design your own approach to our environment.

a fully multidisciplinary program that involves the natural and social sciences as well as the arts and humanities. It explores the relationships between people and the totality of their environments--natural, built, and social. As part of that exploration, environmental studies concerns itself with the description and analysis of natural systems; with interspecies and species-environment relationships and the institutions, policies and laws that affect those relationships; with aesthetic portrayals of nature and how these portrayals affect human perceptions and behavior toward it; and with ethical issues raised by the human presence in the environment.
