{"id":56,"date":"2005-01-31T10:07:18","date_gmt":"2005-01-31T10:07:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oook.info\/blog\/?p=56"},"modified":"2005-01-31T10:07:18","modified_gmt":"2005-01-31T10:07:18","slug":"h5n1-tracking-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oook.info\/blog\/?p=56","title":{"rendered":"H5N1 tracking update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I was reading the H5N1 reports this morning, it occurred to me to look at what I collected a year ago, so I marked up <a href=\"http:\/\/oook.info\/humangeog\/h5n1log.html\">the log files<\/a> with <a href=\"http:\/\/oook.info\/humangeog\/yearagoh5n1.html#dates\">links by date<\/a>. I&#8217;m not sure just what use this has &#8211;the initial thought was to compare the tracking of spread and reports of deaths, to make some sort of analysis of how the emerging story was being covered. <\/p>\n<p>My collection of stories wasn&#8217;t systematic, and perhaps emphasizes the bizarre (trained ducks replaced with racing pigs in a Vietnamese circus, reported <a href=\"http:\/\/oook.info\/humangeog\/h5n1logx.html#6ii04\">6 February<\/a>&#8230;). I was as interested in <i>how<\/i> the story was being presented, how the press was voicing its response to what it was being told by &#8220;officials&#8221; and by its own reporters, as in the sequence of events.<\/p>\n<p>In 2005, the blogosphere is a much more effective means to track events and to find commentary on the larger issues. At the moment, I&#8217;m especially impressed by <a href=\"http:\/\/effectmeasure.blogspot.com\/\">Effect Measure<\/a> (which covers a broad range of epidemiology issues) , <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urgentebooks.com\/blog\/index.php?cat=5\">Pathogen Alert<\/a>, and  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.recombinomics.com\/in_the_news.html\">recombinomics.com<\/a>, but I have also set up RSS feeds for <a href=\"http:\/\/influenzapandemic.blogspot.com\">influenzapandemic.blogspot.com<\/a>, and for occurrences  in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.technorati.com\/watchlists\/rss.html?wid=24001\">technorati<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/news.search.yahoo.com\/news\/rss?p=h5n1&#038;ei=UTF-8&#038;fl=0&#038;x=wrt\">yahoo news<\/a> [the latter two provide URLs that could be used with any RSS aggregator]. I haven&#8217;t been following my <a href=\"http:\/\/news.google.com\/news?q=h5n1&#038;hl=en&#038;lr=&#038;ie=UTF-8&#038;sa=G&#038;edition=us&#038;scoring=d\">Google News search<\/a> very assiduously.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As I was reading the H5N1 reports this morning, it occurred to me to look at what I collected a year ago, so I marked up the log files with links by date.
