A case in point has to do with masking and veiling: masking is now (in 2021, <i>not<\/i> in 2019) <i>de rigeur<\/i> in some settings and circumstances, but a bone of contention in others. Veiling is deprecated in some settings and circumstances, but obligatory in others. One mocks with care, and with an eye peeled for the culture police, and never quite knows where the edges are today. A case in point is packed into this image:<center><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/blackmerh\/51036506313\/in\/album-72157718644316563\/\" title=\"14iii2109x2badj\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51036506313_84379e457d.jpg\" width=\"302\" height=\"500\" alt=\"14iii2109x2badj\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>which I&#8217;ve described as &#8220;the yashmak of her wildest dreams&#8221; (well, it&#8217;s really &#8216;ya&scedil;mak&#8217;, in Turkish). <\/p>\n<p>I first learned the term 60+ years ago, via an Elsa Lanchester song that skates awfully close to the incorrect in 2021:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/79HFcrD1ceo\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\nThe original image was pretty undistinguished, or perhaps just too chaotic, <br \/>and I didn&#8217;t process it the day I took the photo (there were much better candidates):<br \/>(see <a href=\"http:\/\/oook.info\/FT\/Sand.html\">Sand<\/a> for how and why)<\/p>\n<p><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/blackmerh\/51044510822\/in\/dateposted-family\/\" title=\"14iii2109\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/51044510822_cc8e814fb7.jpg\" width=\"336\" height=\"500\" alt=\"14iii2109\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p> but later it occurred to me that mirroring might do something interesting. Elaborate, but not eloquent enough.
