Today&#8217;s case in point is a Language Log posting on Words of the Year: <a href=\"http:\/\/itre.cis.upenn.edu\/~myl\/languagelog\/archives\/003877.html\">Another year of truthiness<\/a>, which notes that &#8220;Webster&#8217;s New World College Dictionary went with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/cgi-bin\/stories.pl?ACCT=104&#038;STORY=\/www\/story\/11-01-2006\/0004464602&#038;EDATE=\">Crackberry<\/a>&#8230;&#8221;, a term that showed up in a link I harvested and <a href=\"http:\/\/oook.info\/mt\/archives\/000467.html\">delicious&#8217;d<\/a> yesterday. Sez the Webster&#8217;s story:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Whether on BlackBerries &#8212; the PDA&#8217;s that spawned this latest appellation &#8212; or cellphones, or other handheld devices, people hunched over these tools are a common sight. That devout-looking hunch itself, note Webster&#8217;s New World editors, is called the Crackberry prayer, homage to this latest obsession&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I was reminded of the existence of a Japanese term for those who live this life, and a quick <a hrefe=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=%22thumb+tribe%22+japanese\">Google search<\/a> retrieved <b><i>oyayubizoku<\/i><\/b>, via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wordspy.com\/words\/thumbculture.asp\">wordspy.com<\/a>. I then remembered that I&#8217;d pointed to this a couple of years ago, and another quick resort to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=%22thumb+tribe%22+oook\">blessed Google<\/a> retrieved <a href=\"http:\/\/oook.info\/anth230\/digitalasia.html\">a page summarizing some investigations on Electronic East Asia<\/a> from mid-November 2004 (a lot of the links are 404 now&#8230;). And at the bottom of that page are links to two novel things I was playing with at that time: <a href=\"http:\/\/oook.info\/musics\/onmusicalvariety1.mp3\">a first podcast On Musical Variety<\/a> (20+ minutes, a pilot for the <a href=\"http:\/\/oook.info\/musics\/\">Cross-Cultural Studies in Music<\/a> course I taught in Winter 2005) and <a href=\"https:\/\/oook.info\/bloggery\/delish2.html\">a screencast on de.licio.us<\/a> [alas, hafta use IE to view it] when it was a new service that most of my colleagues didn&#8217;t know about.<br \/>\n&#8230;and that all connects somehow to this Gem from the Past, christened &#8220;Bad Hair Derby 1966&#8221;:<br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/47445802@N00\/317307515\/\" title=\"Photo Sharing\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/static.flickr.com\/123\/317307515_e068f0971e.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"352\" alt=\"Bad Hair Derby 1966\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes it&#8217;s good to savor the branching pathways that one follows while scanning the day&#8217;s blogs.
