{"id":3940,"date":"2020-09-14T16:45:51","date_gmt":"2020-09-14T20:45:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oook.info\/blog\/?p=3940"},"modified":"2020-09-15T13:59:21","modified_gmt":"2020-09-15T17:59:21","slug":"cajun-interlude","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oook.info\/blog\/?p=3940","title":{"rendered":"Cajun interlude"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Listening to the CDs that accompany <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/American-Epic-Collection-Box-Set\/dp\/B0184U96LG\/\">American Epic<\/a>, I was brought up short by &#8220;La Danseuse&#8221; by Delma Lachney &#038; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blind_Uncle_Gaspard\">Blind Uncle Gaspard<\/a> (1929)<br \/>\n<center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2lhx8FNlYjs\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/center><br \/>\nI know that tune, I thought&#8230; it&#8217;s &#8220;Jeanine&#8217;s Dream&#8221; by the Holy Modal Rounders (Peter Stampfel and Steve Weber):<center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7dGN5ohdPo4\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p>So of course I did a Google search, which landed me with this, from Last Forever&#8217;s 2013 album, No Place Like Home:<center><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/W2Fx2hKVAGc\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\n<\/center><br \/>\n&#8230;and with <a href=\"http:\/\/oook.info\/mt\/archives\/001460.html\">a blog post from 2009<\/a> that I had forgotten (that link is worth clicking for the lyrics to &#8220;Jeanine&#8217;s Dream&#8221;). A bit more digging disclosed that the singer was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.austinchronicle.com\/music\/1997-08-15\/529436\/\">Sonya Cohen<\/a>, daughter of New Lost City Ramblers member John Cohen (and niece of Mike Seeger, Pete Seeger, Peggy Seeger). Alas, Sonya died in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>\nSo round and round we go, rediscovering forgotten music and being whirled into explorations of Cajun music. Another that nailed me is Blind Uncle Gaspard&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/earlycajunmusic.blogspot.com\/2016\/09\/sur-le-borde-de-leau-on-riverside-blind.html\">Sur Le Borde De L&#8217;Eau<\/a>, of which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kedm.org\/post\/lost-bard-louisiana#stream\/0\">Amanda Petrusich<\/a> says <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Whatever he&#8217;s communicating, it&#8217;s extra musical. It&#8217;s something in the tone of his voice, the way that he&#8217;s plays the guitar. It&#8217;s extraordinarily sad.
