Here&#8217;s one that seems to shed useful light on photographic issues of the moment:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><center>E.Gorey&#8217;s Great Simple Theory About Art<\/center>the theory &#8230; that anything that is art &#8230; is <b>presumably about some certain thing, but is really always about something else<\/b>, and it&#8217;s no good having one without the other, because if you just have the something it is boring and if you just have the something else it&#8217;s irritating. <br \/>(in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Floating-Worlds-Letters-Edward-Neumeyer\/dp\/0764959476\/\"><b>Floating Worlds: : The Letters of Edward Gorey and Peter F. Neumeyer<\/b><\/a>, pg 39)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><center><br \/>\n<a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/blackmerh\/45523621282\/in\/album-72157701325321991\/\" title=\"DI26x1825\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1926\/45523621282_6a1d8b4bbf_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"439\" alt=\"DI26x1825\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<\/center><br \/>\nThinking it over, it&#8217;s difficult to gauge how very much of my sensibilities I owe to Edward Gorey, whose work I think I first encountered in 1962, thanks to Laura de la Torre Bueno (<b>The Curious Sofa<\/b> was the gateway drug).<br \/>\n<center><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/BhGlDZJIIAAUpGd.jpg\"><br \/>\n<\/center><br \/>\nThe groundwork before that was surely laid by Charles Addams and other New Yorker cartoonists (via <b>The New Yorker Album: 1925-1950<\/b>) and of course by Walt Kelly&#8217;s <b>Pogo<\/b> (which I first imbibed in the early 1950s, and have never been without ever since), Don Marquis&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/donmarquis.com\/reading-room\/song-of-mehitabel\/\"><b>Archy and Mehitabel<\/b><\/a><center><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/ellarslie.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/archy-meh-sketch-dance-1024x774.png\" width=60%><\/center> and before all Abner Dean&#8217;s <b>What Am I Doing Here?<\/b><center><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/_VoFM4aW7x9A\/TMNNsdk1AfI\/AAAAAAAADmM\/qBTKikaqjR0\/s1600\/what08.jpg\"><\/center> and Heinrich Hoffman&#8217;s <b>Struwwelpeter<\/b>. <center><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/6\/6f\/H_Hoffmann_Struwwel_03.jpg\"><\/center>Some would diagnose a <i>very<\/i> odd childhood, and I suppose that&#8217;s true, but I thank the gods for it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been reading Mark Dery&#8217;s Born to Be Posthumous: The Eccentric Life and Mysterious Genius of Edward Gorey and finding all sorts of relevant things within.
