{"id":3416,"date":"2018-11-07T16:16:38","date_gmt":"2018-11-07T21:16:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oook.info\/blog\/?p=3416"},"modified":"2018-11-07T16:16:38","modified_gmt":"2018-11-07T21:16:38","slug":"iconicity-is-where-you-find-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oook.info\/blog\/?p=3416","title":{"rendered":"iconicity is where you find it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s an absolutely iconic image, once seen never forgotten:<center><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/d\/d0\/Jabberwocky.jpg\/800px-Jabberwocky.jpg\"><br \/>(John Tenniel&#8217;s Jabberwock, from Lewis Carroll&#8217;s <b>Through the Looking-Glass<\/b>, 1871)<br \/>\n<\/center><br \/>\nI remember the frisson when I first opened the book, when I was maybe 8 or 9, and also the pleasure when I first heard the delicious words of the poem: &#8216;mimsy&#8217;, &#8216;mome raths&#8217;, &#8216;slithy toves&#8217;, &#8216;burbled as it came&#8217;, &#8216;vorpal sword&#8217;, &#8216;callooh callay&#8217;, and so on.<\/p>\n<p>\nOf course there&#8217;s plenty of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jabberwocky\">backstory<\/a> to the poem, and Alice&#8217;s response is both marvelous and (Carroll-like) applicable to all sorts of things one has encountered:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n&#8220;It seems very pretty,&#8221; she said when she had finished it, &#8220;but it&#8217;s rather hard to understand!&#8221; (You see she didn&#8217;t like to confess, even to herself, that she couldn&#8217;t make it out at all.) &#8220;Somehow it seems to fill my head with ideas\u2014only I don&#8217;t exactly know what they are!\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the magical wood at the end of Horse Point Road I encountered an uprooted tree that was immediately evocative of the Jabberwock.
