The left-hand panel seems obviously to sport a grinning but rather lopsided face, but the right side is less easily parsed into something that makes sense. <\/p>\n<p>So: in search of hidden essences, I first mirrored the left side and produced a rather more unsettling face, reminiscent of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mask_of_Agamemnon\">The Mask of Agamemnon<\/a>:<center><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/blackmerh\/30647076817\/in\/dateposted-family\/\" title=\"leftside\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1906\/30647076817_da171560ab_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"403\" alt=\"leftside\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<\/center><br \/>\nA quick mirroring of the right side also produced a sort of face, perhaps a bearded figure not unlike my friend Daniel Heikalo:<br \/>\n<center><br \/>\n<a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/blackmerh\/30647062327\/in\/dateposted-family\/\" title=\"rightside\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1948\/30647062327_a6506ff964_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"382\" alt=\"rightside\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<\/center><br \/>\n&#8230;and then it occurred to me to flip that panel vertically, to reveal a gently smiling portrait of a being with an insectoid headpiece:<br \/>\n<center><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/blackmerh\/45590048201\/in\/dateposted-family\/\" title=\"right side upside down\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1969\/45590048201_f66f493808_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"382\" alt=\"right side upside down\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/center><br \/>\nThe conceit of the moment is topological: the two halves are meeting at a corner of tesseractoid hyperspace. But other readings are possible. At the bottom of the left side there might be a demonic motorcyclist:<center><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/blackmerh\/44685340175\/in\/dateposted-family\/\" title=\"left side detail1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1905\/44685340175_f25ff07ffe_n.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"190\" alt=\"left side detail1\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<\/center>or it may be that the mirrored left side should also be flipped vertically to reveal a wrathful or perhaps merely disapproving godlike being:<br \/>\n<center><br \/>\n<a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/blackmerh\/45549086472\/in\/dateposted-family\/\" title=\"wrathful\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1971\/45549086472_fef2c4aacf_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"403\" alt=\"wrathful\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This one has enough enigma to satisfy any devotee of the obscure: It&#8217;s a fissure in a large rock mass, but the two sides seem to have had quite different histories of erosion.
