His comment on my latest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/blackmerh\/albums\/72157699446311592\">Album of Creatures<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n&#8230;petroglyphic gnomons&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\nstrange empathic encounters with the stony beings that bring us into terrestrial arrest<\/p>\n<p>\nVan Gogh has nothing on your rabidic plunge&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s always worthwhile to consider what others see in and say about the images into which I invest (or from which I draw?) so much meaning. The constructive exercise of <b>making meaning<\/b> from fragments, of perceiving <b>form<\/b> in what might first appear chaotic, is surely worth documenting, explicating, tracing in line and word. I need to develop the tools to extract and display what I discover and discern.<\/p>\n<p>\nI deal in the whimsical and the figurative, imagining the Story, as in Pas de Deux<center><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/blackmerh\/44565884375\/in\/photolist-2aU8Uoa-2aU8NLP-23NUeiN-23NU9G3-ZHk1kw-rLQEbF\/\" title=\"20x18166\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1980\/44565884375_c90ba8cc0f_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" alt=\"20x18166\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>and its Lindy Hop variant<\/p>\n<p>\n<a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/blackmerh\/44565903245\/in\/photolist-2aU8Uoa-2aU8NLP-23NUeiN-23NU9G3-ZHk1kw-rLQEbF\" title=\"20x18166a\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1962\/44565903245_5b06b72276_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" alt=\"20x18166a\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/center><br \/>\nAnother recent example is this Rocky Conversation, in which the figure on the left passes stony comment to the askance-looking figure on the right:<center><br \/>\n<a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/blackmerh\/30541223997\/in\/dateposted-family\/\" title=\"20x18170 Rock Conversation\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1922\/30541223997_b221016244_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"414\" alt=\"20x18170 Rock Conversation\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<\/center><br \/>\nI got to wondering about the broader context of the duo and went back to Drift Inn a couple of days later to rephotograph the scene. I wasn&#8217;t surprised to find that the interlocutors weren&#8217;t so clearly present without the definition of the bright sun&#8217;s shade:<center><br \/>\n<a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/blackmerh\/44798714824\/in\/dateposted-family\/\" title=\"DI23x1801\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1980\/44798714824_29a7d5f510_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"418\" alt=\"DI23x1801\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Addendum:<br \/>went back a couple of days later and found the pair still muttering to one another:<center><a data-flickr-embed=\"true\"  href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/blackmerh\/45572685611\/in\/album-72157701325321991\/\" title=\"DI26x1802\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1910\/45572685611_e06d93624b_z.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"404\" alt=\"DI26x1802\"><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/center><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The ephemerality of rock is a perpetual surprise, looking different from hour to hour and day to day, and revealing new facets to every change of viewing angle.
