One of the high points of our trip to France was a couple of hours at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timeout.com\/paris\/en\/art\/henri-cartier-bresson\">Centre Pompidou\u2019s retrospective exhibit<\/a> of his work. The Press Kit publicity <a href=\"http:\/\/www.centrepompidou.fr\/en\/content\/download\/19233\/178352\/version\/5\/file\/PRESS+KIT+HCB.pdf\">(a pdf)<\/a> isn&#8217;t really a substitute for a visit to Paris, but it&#8217;s pretty good. And here&#8217;s a short video:<center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jo0uOf68NdI?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/center><br \/>\nThe experience of visiting this retrospective is pretty stirring: first, the line to get in could be an hour or more (but when we went it was only about 15 minutes), and once in you&#8217;re part of a slow-moving crocodile that moves chronologically (more or less) through Cartier-Bresson&#8217;s life as an artist. The prints are beautifully lit, and even with the crowds it&#8217;s possible to really <i>see<\/i> the images. Photography is allowed, so I was able to grab quick reminders of images that I found especially affecting or surprising (lots that I\u2019d never seen before, as well as the most famous\/iconic of his images). Here they are as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/blackmerh\/sets\/72157642945982204\/\">a Flickr set of 20<\/a>, the wee-waw perspective of which was quite intentional on my part.<\/p>\n<p>Since our return I&#8217;ve been reimmersed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=atget+paris\">Atget&#8217;s work on Paris<\/a> (1890s to his death in 1927) &#8230;see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/george_eastman_house\/sets\/72157621011255003\/\">a George Eastman House Flickr set<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nga.gov\/content\/ngaweb\/press\/exh\/3209.html\">Charles Marville<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=brassai+paris\">Brassa&iuml;<\/a> are other Paris photographers of special interest.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve mentioned Henri Cartier-Bresson several times in the pages of this blog.
