Thus, I&#8217;ve been missing the <b>community<\/b> created by the annotators and commenters who brighten each entry with erudition, miscellaneous carpings, and occasional doggerel. Monday&#8217;s piece (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pepysdiary.com\/archive\/1663\/05\/15\/\">Friday 15 May 1663<\/a>) is a case in point, with [among many others] <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pepysdiary.com\/archive\/1663\/05\/15\/#47569\">Australian Susan&#8217;s addition<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pepysdiary.com\/archive\/1663\/05\/15\/#47648\">jeannine&#8217;s limerick<\/a>, and Robert Gertz&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pepysdiary.com\/archive\/1663\/05\/15\/#48091\">imagined dialog<\/a> as wonderful enlargements on the text.<\/p>\n<p>\n&#8230;and while we&#8217;re enlarging upon texts, three weeks or so ago I pointed to <a href=\"http:\/\/oook.info\/mt\/archives\/000301.html\">a r0ml posting about jinxes<\/a>, and just this morning I happened on two Language Log entries (<a href=\"http:\/\/itre.cis.upenn.edu\/~myl\/languagelog\/archives\/000231.html\">Pickle Jinx<\/a> [16 Dec 2003] and <a href=\"http:\/\/itre.cis.upenn.edu\/~myl\/languagelog\/archives\/000235.html\">High Jinx<\/a> [17 Dec 2003]) in <a href=\"http:\/\/oook.info\/mt\/archives\/000312.html\"><b>Far from the Madding Gerund<\/b><\/a> that offer links to several antecedents in jinx research, and suggest an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0192814893\/qid=1147868496\/sr=1-15\/ref=sr_1_15\/103-7509654-8485434?s=books&#038;v=glance&#038;n=283155\">Opiesque<\/a>\/<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0824054180\/ref=sid_dp_dp\/103-7509654-8485434?%5Fencoding=UTF8&#038;v=glance&#038;n=283155\">Sutton-Smithian<\/a> research frontier&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I don&#8217;t pay nearly enough attention to the serialized Diary of Samuel Pepys, though I glance at it pretty much every day in RSS summary.
