{"id":1769,"date":"2013-04-11T19:42:52","date_gmt":"2013-04-11T19:42:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oook.info\/blog\/?p=1769"},"modified":"2013-05-26T14:50:27","modified_gmt":"2013-05-26T18:50:27","slug":"remembering-a-teacher-50-years-later","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oook.info\/blog\/?p=1769","title":{"rendered":"Remembering a teacher, 50 years later"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In my freshman year at Harvard I studied Swedish (Scandinavian B &#8211;there was no Scandinavian A) under G\u00f6ran Printz-P\u00e5hlson, a pleasant if (as I thought) somewhat lumbering Swedish poet (I particularly remember that he wore leather jackets which creaked when he moved). He was a friendly and generous teacher, though I was too much in awe to actually seek him out and, well, converse. Just today I happened upon an electronic version of his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.openbookpublishers.com\/reader\/86\"><b>Letters of Blood, and Other Works in English<\/b><\/a>, and learned that he died in 2006. The introductory materials tell me some of what I missed by not, well, conversing. <\/p>\n<p><i>Poetics<\/i> is a subject of which I am largely ignorant, but a quick flip through the pages of the prose parts of the book suggests that I might enjoy discovering on some winter night when the snow howls without. And I&#8217;m mostly immune to poetry, though sometimes my attention is caught. And caught it is by some bits of Printz-P\u00e5hlson&#8217;s, like this from <i>My Interview with I.A. Richards<\/i><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Inversion is a counterfeit experience<br \/>there is but one irreversability.<br \/><b>Chestnuts, rabid squirrels, slosh and sleet,<br \/>the sullen, birdstained wisdom of John Harvard.<\/b><br \/>O <a href=\"http:\/\/www.signs-unique.co.uk\/ekmps\/shops\/autounique\/images\/fyffes-bananas-drinks-mat-coaster-4580-p.jpg\">Fyffes bananas<\/a>, obscene planks,<br \/>the flexes bared to vision like the sinews<br \/>in Vessalius.
