{"id":135,"date":"2005-12-21T19:30:42","date_gmt":"2005-12-21T19:30:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oook.info\/blog\/?p=135"},"modified":"2005-12-21T19:30:42","modified_gmt":"2005-12-21T19:30:42","slug":"bolivian-interlude","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oook.info\/blog\/?p=135","title":{"rendered":"Bolivian interlude"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In honor of Evo Morales&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/globalvoices\/2005\/12\/21\/elections-in-the-bolivian-blogs\/\">victory in Bolivia<\/a>, I&#8217;ve excavated a trove of Bolivian music.<\/p>\n<p>\n35 years or so ago (in the very early 1970s) our friends <a href=\"http:\/\/oook.info\/image33\/kentlee.htm\">Kent<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/oook.info\/image33\/shel.htm\">Shel<\/a> Anderson spent a couple of years in Cochabamba, where Shel did fieldwork on market systems. They brought back a small collection of 7-inch 33 1\/3 records of music that was being played on the radio in Cochabamba at that time, and the records stayed with me when they left Nova Scotia in 1973. I puzzle over them every few years &#8211;the music is raw and amateurish in its production values, and completely unapologetic for being utterly Bolivian. I don&#8217;t have enough of the cultural context to appreciate the  documentary significance of these records in Bolivian cultural terms, so for me they&#8217;re just a snapshot of another reality. I can&#8217;t imagine that there&#8217;s any harm in digitizing and distributing them in 2005. <\/p>\n<p>\nEmiliana Velazco should certainly be better known for her absolutely unique vocal style (or maybe it&#8217;s <i>not<\/i> unique, and everybody in <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?q=tupiza+bolivia&#038;ll=-21.439647,-65.723648&#038;spn=0.375841,0.783428&#038;t=k&#038;hl=en\">Valle Hermoso<\/a> sings that way&#8230;). You can&#8217;t quite believe she&#8217;s going to <a href=\"http:\/\/oook.info\/mp3s\/cholita.mp3\">keep doing that<\/a> for six minutes&#8230; and then you turn the record over, and find that she has <i>another<\/i> six minutes in her&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/oook.info\/mp3s\/santaveracruz2.mp3\">Santa Veracruz<\/a>  (tonada) 6 min, 11MB and <a href=\"http:\/\/oook.info\/mp3s\/TodosSantos.mp3\">Coplas de Todos Santos<\/a> 6 min, 11MB<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/oook.info\/mp3s\/emilianaf.jpg\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/oook.info\/mp3s\/emilianab.gif\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In honor of Evo Morales&#8217; victory in Bolivia, I&#8217;ve excavated a trove of Bolivian music. 35 years or so ago (in the very early 1970s) our friends Kent and Shel Anderson spent a couple of years in Cochabamba, where Shel did fieldwork on market systems.
