It&#8217;s a <i>tour de force<\/i> of allusion and connection, and I decided to snip out some bits that really should have a wider listenership. They pretty much stand alone, though the ones I&#8217;ve chosen aren&#8217;t <i>mostly<\/i> about the nominal subject of the changing meanings of Open Source.<\/p>\n<p>He makes repeated use of a favorite bit from <b>Princess Bride<\/b>: <a href=\"http:\/\/oook.info\/r0ml\/r0ml0.mp3\">&#8220;You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.&#8221;<\/a> (Inigo Montoya [Mandy Patinkin]). This gets across the essence of <a href=\"http:\/\/oook.info\/r0ml\/r0ml5.mp3\">semasiology<\/a> very memorably.<\/p>\n<p>\nTo get something of the flavor of a bout with r0ml, here&#8217;s a <a href=\"http:\/\/oook.info\/r0ml\/r0ml1.mp3\">(partial) summary of last year&#8217;s OSCON talk<\/a> (1:43) &#8211;and the whole thing is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itconversations.com\/shows\/detail169.html\"> available<\/a>, and extremely worthwhile.<\/p>\n<p>\nHe discusses Don Knuth&#8217;s development of the language APL, and as an aside, mentions Knuth&#8217;s instantiation of the term <a href=\"http:\/\/oook.info\/r0ml\/r0ml4.mp3\">&#8220;Web&#8221;<\/a> (0:27)<\/p>\n<p>\nHe really gets going with the example of <a href=\"http:\/\/oook.info\/r0ml\/r0ml2.mp3\">the history of reading<\/a> (5:15) &#8211;the percentage literate refers to the ability to read the code of programs. He ends with a farrago <a href=\"http:\/\/oook.info\/r0ml\/r0ml3.mp3\">on reading aloud, and silently<\/a> (8:13), citing Saints Isidore, Augustine, and Ambrose &#8230;and Charlemagne and Alcuin of York too.<\/p>\n<p>\nNow <i>that&#8217;s<\/i> a Keynote!<\/p>\n<p>You might be interested in <a href=http:\/\/r0ml.net\/blog\/>r0ml&#8217;s blog<\/a> (Taking IT Personally), and perhaps also in the Wired News story on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/news\/roadtrip\/riverroad\/0,2704,65184,00.html?tw=wn_3culthead\">Isidore, patron saint of nerds<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve listened to r0ml Lefkowitz&#8217; OSCON 2005 keynote (The Semasiology of Open Source [Part 2]) several times, and grokked more with each hearing.
