I read David's invocation of 'population dynamics' as an element that "patterns" (along with 'climate change' and 'technology') as shorthand and label for what I would complicate as Ecology, summarizing the marvelous complexity of Homo sapiens as a member of the global community of Life. Andrewartha summarizes the numbers and distribution of living beings as the quintessential measurements, and I imagine as properties of a global entity that I’ll happily summarize as Gaia ...autopoeitic, dynamic, a community of transducers of incoming solar radiation... bound who knows where...
