In March 2012 we mounted a show of tessellated macrophotographs at Pinnacle Creative Team in Rockland, Maine. Because the available space could hold only a dozen or so large prints, I'm using this medium to explain the technique in more detail and provide links to Flickr images of other tilings created as we planned the exhibit.

I started to explore tiling about a year ago, when I first began to work with GIMP (Gnu Image Manipulation Program). One of my first successful experiments began with a picture I'd taken of frozen Swiss chard in the garden:

The result was Apotheosis of Chard, a centerpiece of my show at The Good Tern in June 2011:

Many of Betsy's magnificent images (see brootphoto.com for an elegant presentation, and her Flickr photostream for current work) seemed to me obvious candidates for tiling, but it was not until our friend and giclée printer Lisa suggested a show in the foyer of her shop that I started to comb through Betsy's images systematically, and to produce experimental renderings. I also tried a number of images I'd taken in March 2011 while visiting a favorite beach in Northern California (see the Flickr set Pebble Beach tafoni for the originals).
