Blast furnaces
Larger scale than bloomeries, kept in continuous production for months
with addition of ore, flux and charcoal; served by crews of a dozen or
more; situated near watercourses powerful and dependable enough to keep
bellows functioning continuously; produce cast iron as pigs, which could
then be further processed in other kinds of forges (fineries, chaferies).
