My friend Skip pointed out that the bower bird (Ptilinorhynchus spp. and others) makes a better trope than the magpie: not just a matter of hoarding things (which is what magpies do, mindlessly), the bower bird uses them to (a) construct and (b) entice... Some examples:

The great bower-birds are the least colourful bower-birds and are virtually confined to the tropics. The males are promiscuous. They construct the bower & decorate its approach purely to attract females, who are left to build a nest & raise the chicks unaided.
