Managing ArcIMS

ESRI's Internet Map Server (ArcIMS) allows the distribution of interactive maps via the Web, and also permits linkage to databases on other servers. The prototypes at ims1.wlu.edu are examples constructed over the last year by Skip Williams and myself. A few of our peer institutions are exploring the same territory (see Mt. Holyoke's Center for Environmental Literacy Spatial Data Server), but most haven't yet begun to explore the pedagogical and outreach potentials of ArcIMS. See my summary of Spring 2002, a summary from NYU, and CSU Fresno demos.

ArcIMS is now ready to move from exploratory/prototype status to development/production, and Skip needs to be freed to develop further database applications. With some assistance and participation in ESRI training I will be able to manage the server and assist faculty in the creation of applications for course uses.
