Searching the Web
There is no single source that indexes everything on the WWW, so finding
what you are looking for requires ingenuity and persistence. There are a
number of search tools to try:
Indexes of Sites on the WWW
- YAHOO is a dynamic subject
guide with many new additions every day.
- AltaVista ("the Whole
Web...")
- Magellan
- Excite
- Point
- Netlink is W&L's own
index of the Internet (not just the WWW), especially useful to locate
sites geographically.
Finding Information in WWW Documents
Spiders, robots and webcrawlers explore the WWW and construct indexes of
words they encounter in Web documents. You can make keyword
searches in these indexes, then use the resulting lists of links
to retrieve documents. Traffic on
these searching utilities is often high, especially during daytime
hours.
