Using Fetch to move files between Mac and Liberty
Fetch is a Macintosh ftp utility originally developed at Dartmouth
and found on the Macs in W&L labs, in the Network folder.
First, locate the Network folder by double-clicking on the hard
disk icon (usually in the upper right hand corner of the Desktop).
Double-click the Network folder to open it, then double-click the Fetch
folder to open. Then double-click on the cute little doggie icon.
The "Open Connection..." dialog box will open.
To connect to Liberty, change the "Host name" entry to
liberty.uc.wlu.edu
and fill in the User ID and Password fields with your username and
Liberty password, and erase the /pub entry in the Directory
field. Then click on OK and Fetch will connect to Liberty and
show the long form (with .xxx files which you usually don't see in
Liberty) of your Home Directory file and directory listing.
- To move a file from Mac to Liberty:
- Choose Put
file by clicking on the appropriate button
- Locate the file you wish to move to Liberty and highlight it
- Click the Open button to move the file
To move a file from Liberty to Mac:- Choose Get file
- Locate the file you wish to move to the Mac
- Click on the Open button to move the file
One fine point to keep in mind: if you want to move a binary file
(like a .gif image or an executable file or program) you should be sure
to select binary. Note also that .gif files should be moved as 'raw
data', and NOT as 'Mac Binary'.
