Setting the Working Directory

ArcView saves details of its operations in a Working Directory. The default is C:\temp, but this is not a very good choice unless you always use the same machine. It's better to specify your own Working Directory as one of the steps in starting a Project.

Using your network drive (H:\) is probably a good choice, and it's probably worthwhile to set up a folder which you'll always use (name it something like H:\gis\) and make it a habit to do the following whenever you start a new project:

  1. From ArcView's File menu, choose 'Set Working Directory...'

    and

  2. replace the default c:\temp with your own choice
