Biology 182 Fall 1997
Third Assignment
DUE (in Bio182 drop box --instructions below) by 5 PM October 31
This is the big one, in which you report your search for
- secondary (review) articles [you need 1 or 2] and
- primary articles [you need at least 4 or 5]
Be sure to read through the "Week 3" material carefully
--it has
many hints and examples that can help you figure out what to do and how
to do it.
Use the various databases demonstrated, choosing as seems appropriate for
your subject, and report
- your search terms and strategies (as you
used and developed them for each of the databases you consulted)
- your findings (bibliographic citations in appropriate
format, but without
annotations)
- your current thinking about your topic (the title
you think you'll propose to your faculty supervisor, plus comments on how
it's gone so far, what's done, what's still missing, etc.)
What I'm looking for is sensible and thoughtful use of databases.
You shouldn't expect to find everything you need in one place, and you
should concentrate your attention on finding sources available at
W&L.
Here's how to use the DROP BOX:
- Compose your text and save it to your H: drive on Jefferson. I
suggest you name the file with your initials (e.g., hab3,
the '3' indicating that it's the third assignment)
- Open both your H:
drive and the L: drive by double-clicking on their desktop icons
- On
the L: drive, locate Biology, then Bio182
- Open Bio182 and drag your file from your H: to the DROP BOX
You won't be able to read anything in the drop box (only faculty
have that privilege), but you can read anything that's in the
shared folder.
If you're ordinarily a Mac user it'll probably be easier to do this
assignment in the wonderful world of Windows.
You should try to submit this way, but if all else fails you can
give me the Third Assignment on paper.
