Biology 182 Fall 1997
First Assignment

DUE (on paper, at least for this first assignment) by 9 AM Wednesday 9 October, with one copy to Dr. Blackmer and one copy to Dr. Simurda or Dr. Knox.

Explore the resources in the Washington & Lee libraries which are useful for your topic. Start with books, including reference books. Continue with other media if you are able and inspired. Gather citations for the sources you find, and make a brief summary annotation for each.

Present your findings as a narrative of your search strategies (include the search terms you tried) and your discoveries. Include citations (using the style specified in Dr. Hurd's original handout, and using the formats suggested on pages 122-123 of A Short Guide to Writing About Biology to resolve any problems) and annotations.

How much? Hard to say. We want to see evidence that you've explored, tried [and gone beyond!] the tools and approaches demonstrated in class, thought about what you were finding and how to locate more/better. To some degree it's a competitive thing, and you'll be judged and graded in comparison with others in the class, but each person has a different topic, so it's also a matter of what you do with what you've got.
