The Journal Literature

In most sciences the research or 'primary' literature is published in periodicals, often called 'journals'. In any specialty it's necessary to keep in close contact with a number of leading journals, and in addition any active scientist also keeps track of what's going on outside his or her specialty by scanning generalist publications like Science, Nature, Scientific American and perhaps others. The indexing services (which allow keyword and other types of electronic searching) are never absolutely up to date, and some are VERY far behind. We will explore a number of these utilities, but you'll find that the habit of regularly LOOKING at several current periodicals in the library will yield all sorts of serendipitous discoveries.

We'll use the following:

Each has strengths and blind spots, and for most subjects it's really necessary to use several. Some have abstracts, others provide only citations, and each has its own peculiarities.

We'll start with PAO, which indexes some 1500 'general' periodicals. The great advantage is its ready access (via Annie terminals) and familiar interface; its main limitations are

So we'll try the same searches in PAO that we did last week with Annie and HOLLIS:

SUMMARY The behavior of the classic MacArthur consumer-resource equations
is explored after relaxing the implicit assumption of no limit
cycles. As the level of connectedness increases, the sequence

TITLE Chaos in a Three-Species Food Chain.

 APPEARS IN Ecology 1991, v72n3, Jun p. 896-903.

SUMMARY A continuous time model of a food chain incorporating nonlinear
functional responses exhibits chaotic dynamics in long-term
behavior when biologically reasonable parameter values are
chosen. The appearance of chaos in this model suggests that
chaotic dynamics may be common in natural food webs.

SUMMARY The relationship between population biology and theories of chaos

So in short this PAO search gives us a lot of useful general background to help understand the phenomenon in the discipline.

Here are some TERMS that seem relevant to 'chaos biology', extracted from those PAO records and suggesting subjects I might profitably explore in more detail in this connection:

And my attention has been called to three books: Lewin's Complexity and Kauffman's Origins of Order and Glass and Mackey's From Clocks to Chaos --all of which are in our library.

Let's see if we can broaden the search a bit by truncating:

Animal populations. Deer. AUTHOR Torroni, Antonio. TITLE Mitochondrial DNA "clock" for the Amerinds and its implications for timing their entry into North America. APPEARS IN Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America 1994, v91n3, Feb 1, p. 1158-1162. SUMMARY It is estimated that the separation of the Chibcha-speaking tribes of Central America from other linguistic groups began approximately 8,000-10,000 years before the present. Characterization of the mtDNA of 110 Chibcha speakers with 14 restriction enzymes leads on the basis of their time depth to an estimated mtDNA nucleotide substitution rate for Amerinds of 0.022-0.020% per 10,000 years. TITLE Pairwise comparisons of mitochondrial DNA sequences in subdivided populations and implications for early human evolution. APPEARS IN Genetics 1994, v136n2, Feb p. 673-683. SUMMARY The effect on the distribution of pairwise differences between mitochondrial DNA sequences of the incorporation into the underlying population genetics model of two particular effects that seem realistic for human populations is examined. Population genetics models fail to reflect important features of human mitochondrial DNA evolution. SUBJECT Genetics. Deoxyribonucleic acid. DNA. Evolution. AUTHOR Lynch, Michael. TITLE A method for calibrating molecular clocks and its application to animal mitochondrial DNA. APPEARS IN Genetics 1993, v135n4, Dec p. 1197-1208. SUMMARY A study developed a least-squares procedure for calibrating molecular clocks. Results indicate that the average rate of mitochondrial DNA evolution is elevated with respect to that of nuclear DNA. AUTHOR Lougheed, Stephen C. TITLE Mitochondrial DNA hyperdiversity and vocal dialects in a subspecies transition of the rufous-collared sparrow. APPEARS IN Condor 1993, v95n4, Nov p. 889-895. SUMMARY A study investigated the variation in rufous-collared sparrow song dialects. DNA variability was found to reflect secondary introgression between two subspecies. SUBJECT Ornithology. Birds.
