Annual Reviews (and similar annual
complations) are
extremely important resources when you are trying to get up to
speed in understanding the progress and evolution of a research area.
These publications (which exist for many scientific and social
science fields) commission review articles whose
purpose is to summarize research and provide substantial bibliography on
current hot topics. Typically, the research reviews are written at a
level above that of the average layman, but aren't so abstruse as to be
beyond the knowledge base of interested students.
Until a year or so ago the only means of access to Annual Reviews was
looking through their tables of contents and indexes, but there is now an
online search utility that greatly simplifies the use of the
resource. You can find a link to the utility on the W&L Science
