Dyadic relationships in Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakuse

The following is how characters act toward each other. Not all relationships are listed, of course, as some characters didn't interact much in the movie.

Chihiro and Haku
At first sight, Chihiro thought Haku was strange--even though he was just trying to save her. She obeyed him when he told her to run away, and later when Haku found her again, she didn't simply run off in fear. Chihiro obeyed Haku all the time; he was the only person that could help her back to her world, and so she trusted him completely. Haku, because he remembered Chihiro from years ago, tried to help her immediately. He wasn't scared at any point to hug her and shield her. Chihiro remembered Haku's real name and he helped her keep hers. Kamaji was the only person to notice their bond in the movie. Even though they're children, they love each other.

Chihiro and Kamaji
At first, Kamaji was cold to Chihiro. But he quickly became a lot like a wise grandfather-figure. He refused to give her a job, though when Kamaji saw that Chihiro obeyed his orders and wouldn't give up on carrying the heavy coal, he saw her determined side and agreed to help her. This was shown when Kamaji lied for Chihiro and told Lin that Chihiro was his granddaughter. Kamaji tied an important part of the story together--he gave Chihiro his train tickets, showing that he cares a lot for her. And of course, he alone was able to see that Haku and Chihiro loved each other.

Chihiro and Lin
More than anything, Lin is like a big sister to Chihiro. Lin was one of the people that Chihiro trusted most while at the bath house. Though Lin at first didn't like Chihiro because she was a human, Chihiro showed Lin that she was determined by working hard. In the end, Lin grew to love Chihiro and told her to come back safely (though Chihiro never got a chance to).

Chihiro and Yubaba
Chihiro's and Yubaba's first meeting wasn't friendly, and Yubaba grew to become the enemy. Chihiro isn't the kind of person to hate anyone, though, and never tried to be rude to Yubaba. Yubaba had no intentions of returning Chihiro's kindness; she kept being as evil as possible and wouldn't even stop when Boh asked her to (she went through with giving Chihiro a final test). So of course the relationship between the main character and the villain isn't strong.

Chihiro and Zeniba
Zeniba was like Chihiro's grandmother by the end of the movie (Chihiro even called her 'Granny'). During their first meeting, Zeniba tried to kill Haku, which should have made Chihiro mad. Chihiro cared too much about helping Haku to worry about Zeniba, though. When things were sorted out, Zeniba created a hair tie for Chihiro along with No-Face, Boh, and Yubaba's bird which showed their friendship. At the end of the movie, the hair tie shone, which proved to Chihiro that her adventure was real. Zeniba forgave Haku for his thievery, which meant a lot to Chihiro, as well.

Chihiro and Boh
Chihiro first met Boh when she dove into his pile of pillows to hide from Yubaba. To Chihiro, Boh was an obstacle that kept her from getting to Haku, so they weren't immediate friends. Once Boh was turned into a mouse, he turned to Chihiro, who was the only person he could trust there.

Chihiro and Yubaba's bird
Being the pet of the enemy, Yubaba's bird at first attacked Chihiro. But like Boh, once she changed forms, she and Chihiro became friends.

Chihiro and No-Face
When Haku and Chihiro were crossing the bridge at the start of the movie, Chihiro noticed No-Face staring at her. She was too busy trying to hold her breath to figure out who he was, though. Later on, when No-Face stood in the garden outside the bath house, Chihiro let him in, thinking that he was a customer. No-Face was violent at the beginning, but because Chihiro was kind to him throughout the whole movie, No-Face became kinder as well near the end of the movie.

Haku and Yubaba
Haku came to Yubaba years ago, and like Chihiro, asked for a job. Since then, he's been like a slave to her. He follows her orders, although he knows that she's an enemy. Haku helps Chihiro, though, even when it means not listening to Yubaba.

Haku and Lin
They're good friends, seeing how they've been working at the bath house together for years. Lin jokes around, though, saying how she can't stand more than one of Haku.

Haku and Zeniba
Haku stole Zeniba's Gold Seal and she hated him for that. Zeniba sent paper birds after his dragon form to harm him. When Chihiro retrieved the Gold Seal and returned it to Zeniba, Haku was forgiven.

Yubaba and Zeniba
They basically hate each other. Yubaba and Zeniba are twins, but almost opposites in their personalities. While they both tried to kill Haku, Zeniba found it in her heart to forgive him. She was close to Chihiro as well, yet Yubaba hated Chihiro.

Yubaba and Boh
Boh is the only one who Yubaba cares for. He's her son and he brings out the softness in her. Yubaba spoils him completely.
