Assignment 1

by 9 PM on Tuesday 14 September:
  1. Go to bloggery.wlu.edu/anth230/ and read the 'Ebert on Rashomon' posting. Click where it says 'Comments' and leave your own comment --either on the question as asked, or maybe on somebody else's comment!

This will be your first brush with the course blog, which I intend to use in various (creative, yet to be defined) ways. Each member of the course is an AUTHOR, with the power to make postings to the blog. You can try this out by going to bloggery.wlu.edu/mt.cgi ...the login screen. At the moment your login name is your FIRST name as it appears on the course home page, and your password is your LAST name (Arielle's is the only exception --hers is just the first part of her surname). You may want to CHANGE your password... (use the 'Edit your profile' link, once you've logged in).

Today's assignment is just to COMMENT on my posting, but you CAN make your own postings, which will then be read by the whole class, and later assignments will pose specific questions for you to respond to in this way. The blog is intended to be a communication medium for the course, and GOLD STARS will be awarded to those who come up with inventive uses of the opportunity... so don't feel that you should wait for a specific assignment!

Always remember that material you post here is, in theory, available to anybody anywhere anytime.

  2. Go to bloglines.com and REGISTER (there's a link in the upper right hand corner) to create a Bloglines account. You might want to use your Novell password, so as to have fewer to remember.
Bloglines is a free service that makes it easy to keep up with your favorite blogs and news feeds. With Bloglines, you can subscribe to the RSS feeds of your favorite blogs, and Bloglines will monitor updates to those sites. You can read the latest entries easily within Bloglines.

  3. login at bloglines.com/login, click on ADD, and enter into the "Blog or Feed URL" space this URL:
    http://bloggery.wlu.edu/anth230/
and click SUBSCRIBE. It's probably wise to choose the index.rtf feed.

Each time you login to bloglines.com you'll see notification of any new additions to the course blog.

You can add other blogs that interest you, and bloglines also provides some other interesting features that you may want to explore. I'll demonstrate more of its features on Thursday.
