I inherited my father's shop when he died in 1977, and soon thereafter I started to explore the world of tools and wood. From quite early I wanted to build musical instruments that I could imagine, though I also did a lot of practical household carpentry and read books and catalogs to learn more. On the way to the California sabbatical in 1979, I spent a week apprenticing with Nick Apollonio, a wonderfully skilled luthier in Maine, and bought tools to facilitate projects. A few of my attempts have been very successful (notably a cittern I built and gave to Daniel Heikalo), and all have been learning experiences...
